WARMER HOMES DAY
Today is day two of the Energy Saving Trust’s Energy Saving Week and the day we take a closer look at insulation. Not the sexiest topic but because around half of heat loss in a typical home is through the walls and loft, it's worth checking whether yours are insulated.
The amount of heat lost in homes annually through un-insulated lofts and cavity walls alone is enough to heat over 1.6million UK homes for a year and around 13million UK homes could benefit from topping up their loft insulation. Collectively these un-insulated lofts are wasting over £510million a year.
Amazingly, if everyone in the UK installed loft insulation (up to 270mm thickness), the financial saving would pay the gas bills of around 770,000 families for a year. It would save nearly three million tonnes of CO2 per year, the equivalent saving of taking nearly one million UK cars off the road.
The same is true for cavity walls. Around 6.3m UK households need cavity wall insulation which collectively means we are wasting around £690m a year on heating costs. If we stopped wasting this heat, it would save nearly 4m tonnes of CO2 a year. If everyone in the UK, that could filled their cavity walls, they would shave around £700m off the Nation’s annual domestic energy bills, which would pay to heat 900,000 homes for a year.
