DAB digital radios may offer better reception and automatic tuning but they also require more power to do so.  Without compromising its performance the PURE ONE Elite is a portable stylish stereo radio with a smaller power consumption than most. Compared to the average of the top ten selling DAB radios of this type it has about a quarter of the consumption in standby mode and less than half when playing audio. You can also choose to listen in FM mode or plug in your own music.

In digital mode there's a great choice of stations, easy station selection and crisp, clear digital-quality sound. It also has ReVuTM  technology for live radio pause and rewind for up to fifteen minutes, and handy countdown and sleep timers. It can be plugged straight into the mains or it will play for up to 70 hours using alkaline batteries and up to 35 hours when using the rechargeable ChargePAK which can be purchased separately.

Ever wished you could make something from nothing?

It might sound too good to be true, but this isn't just a lot of hot air. This month's new addition to the Good Energy Shop will allow you to generate energy from the air outside! The Ecodan air source heat pump uses natural energy in the air to keep your home warm and can reduce the CO2 emissions of a standard home by up to 50% and bring down the running costs by 30%.

The heat pump works by using air to heat a liquid - a refrigerant - which has a very low boiling point. The air from outside (even at chilly winter temperatures) is warm enough to heat the refrigerant and turn it into a gas. The gas is then compressed which heats it even more. The final step involves condensing the gas back into a liquid - a process which releases heat energy. The heat energy released is extracted and used to heat the water in your home. Although perhaps most suitable for under floor heating, thanks to its clever control system the Ecodan can, in certain cases, be used with radiators too.

The Ecodan has great credentials. It's made by Mitsubishi, who are not only committed to responsible manufacturing, but also have years of knowledge and experience. It can heat water up to 60°C and work in temperatures as low as -15°C. It comes in a variety of sizes and the installation is relatively straightforward - you won't need to dig up your floor or knock down your walls. All models are tested by BRE (Building Research Establishment) and have a three-year warranty. The Ecodan was also the winner of the Environment and Energy product of the year award in 2008. High credentials with a low carbon status - what more could you want?

Shelves for life – how to save energy even when you’re dead

If there’s one thing you do in life that will certainly be good for the earth, it’s dying. But what’s the most environmentally friendly way to go? We’ve seen plenty of eco-coffins on the market, but this idea kills them all off. It’s dead good.

Designer William Warren came up with the Shelves For Life in an attempt to further explore the sentimentality we have with our possessions, and to encourage life-long engagement with them. An antidote to the quick fix cheap mentality of the modern shopper. The idea is that you have these rather dashing looking shelves cut to your own unique measurements. Assembled in your home you can fill them with your favourite possessions and enjoy them for your whole life. When you die, the shelves can be disassembled and re-built into a coffin that fits you exactly.

It’s a bit more of a personal furniture experience than Ikea.

“We’re all going to die one day and we’ll need a coffin, so why not make your coffin from something you’ve owned and loved for years and save your bereaved family having to choose one (and pay for one) at an already difficult time?” William said.

One of the moist unique energy/resource saving measures we have come across. And watch this space, William is promising a follow up product of an ash tray that doubles up as an urn.

New products: Morphy Richards' Ecoelectric kettle & slow cooker

In their bid to raise the game for more eco friendly home appliances Morphy Richards have released the Ecoelectric kettle & the Ecoelectric slow cooker, and we’ve got them both at the shop. 

Ecoelectric slow cooker, only £34.25

Slow cooking, it’s all the rage amongst us low carbonites (and superb chefs). Ask any decent cook about the best way to do stews, casseroles, soups, all kinds of meals, and they will say “slowly.” Thankfully, we can now hear this as “energy efficiently”.  A standard slow cooker uses around 340 Watts compared with an electric oven at 900 Watts - and this beauty uses 44% less energy than other slow cookers due to its rigorous insulation. You’ll see your bills drop significantly if you start to use this regularly.

Never slow cooked before? Fear not – the cooker comes with a slow cook book. 


Ecoelectric kettle, only £34.25

Making tea is such an everyday thing that it’s easy to forget how much power is actually consumed to boil water. This new Jug kettle offers a solution – an eco switch. There are two settings, one to boil water to 100 degrees, and the other to only 85 degrees, saving 24% of the energy in the process. For coffee lovers this is ideal, as boiling water will actually burn the coffee and leave a bitter after taste. Good for herbal tea drinkers too, who usually have to wait 3 hours before the water they have boiled has cooled down enough to be palatable!

It's great to see a main stream company making the switch to efficient products, they promise more on the way.

An Eco Toaster.... AT LAST!

Eco toast for the high energy low energy breakfast. 

The best invention since sliced bread, we've just got in the all new eco toaster. Despite using 34% less energy than standard toasters, the Ecoelectric 2 Slice Toaster still makes a perfect job of making your toast. Thanks to its unique auto-close lid the Ecoelectric keeps the heat around the toast which means that it's quicker and much more efficient, and us eco warriors are pretty busy so that's a good thing.

Good Energy Shop products feature in Time Out eco A-Z

Recently Time Out published a special eco-friendly edition. Described as the essential urban eco handbook, it included an A to Z guide to being a green Londoner.

In the E for Energy section two of the Good Energy Shop's products and services were mentioned: the Wattson energy meter and the Green Concierge home assessment service. 

This is what Time Out said:
